Dusting Analysis
As a cosmetic colorant, CI 60730 does not function as an active ingredient with reported efficacy claims that would be subject to 'dusting' concerns.
The Formula
Formulation
Stability
CI 60730 demonstrates exceptional stability across a broad pH range of 2 to 11 and maintains integrity at temperatures up to 250°C. It exhibits good UV resistance, ensuring color consistency and preventing fading upon light exposure. While readily water-soluble, it is insoluble in common lipid phases such as vegetable oil, isopropyl myristate, and silicon oil, though it can be dispersed in sorbitol. It consistently produces a uniform, deep purple-violet color even at very low inclusion rates.
Conflicts
- Not permitted for use in lip products or in products intended for the eye area due to an elevated risk of absorption through mucous membranes.
- Not recommended for use on damaged or compromised skin, or in the perioral area, where increased absorption could potentially lead to irritation, sensitization, or allergic reactions.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has deferred evaluation of CI 60730, acknowledging its safety assessment by the FDA. The FDA approves Ext. D&C Violet 2 (CI 60730) for coloring externally applied cosmetics when certified and conforming to specifications, explicitly prohibiting its use in lip or eye area products due to increased absorption risk. The European Union's Cosmetics Directive similarly lists CI 60730 for use in all cosmetics not intended to contact mucous membranes. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), when evaluating its use as a non-oxidative hair dye at a maximum on-head concentration of 0.5% active dye, noted that a sensitizing potential could not be excluded. Environmental Working Group (EWG) also indicates higher concern for products applied to damaged skin, around the mouth, or eyes due to absorption risks, which may contribute to irritation, allergies, and systemic toxicity.

Verdict
CI 60730 is a stable and potent violet cosmetic colorant suitable for aesthetic enhancement in various external formulations, but its application is strictly limited in products intended for the eyes, lips, or damaged skin due to absorption and sensitization concerns.
