Mechanism of Action
This synthetic lipid integrates into the skin's natural lipid matrix, particularly within the stratum corneum, where it contributes to forming a water-impermeable barrier. Ceramide 6 II supports skin barrier resistance by preventing transepidermal water loss and shielding against external aggressors. Its unique alpha-hydroxy group facilitates extra hydrogen bonding, stabilizing the lipid matrix and supporting the skin's vital acid mantle, thus promoting sustained hydration and elasticity.

Stability
Ceramide 6 II demonstrates chemical stability across typical cosmetic pH ranges (4.5-6.5) and is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 90°C. For optimal integration into formulations and to mitigate potential recrystallization or degradation, it is generally advised to incorporate ceramides at or below 40°C. If using powdered ceramide, it should be fully dissolved in a compatible oil by heating to 80-90°C, followed by gradual cooling.

Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that Ceramide 6 II (Ceramide AP) is safe for use in cosmetics. It exhibits high biocompatibility and is well-tolerated, even on sensitive or damaged skin. Acute toxicity studies indicate a low risk of severe acute side effects. While generally very mild, some individuals may rarely experience mild irritation, such as temporary redness, itching, or swelling.
